Upper Blue Mountains Camera Club

Tomorrow night I am heading to the Upper Blue Mountains Camera Club to do my 1 hour ‘HDR Evolution’ presentation. I really enjoy sharing with others the ‘how to’ of HDR and I think people are surprised to see that HDR does not have to be overcooked! If you’re a member then I look forward to meeting you tomorrow night, if you’re not a member and live in the Blue Mountains then maybe you should join!

New Sponsor for the Google Plus Walk

HDR Soft are giving me a Photomatix Pro Plus Bundle valued at $119 to give away on the upcoming Google Plus Anniversary Walk (Click here for more info). I use and recommend Photomatix for HDR, I have tried a lot of HDR software and like Photomatix the most! If you cannot get along to the walk and you want to get a copy of Photomatix… as a reader of the blog you can still save 15% by using the code ‘on3legs’ when you check out!

Today’s iCandy – The Wonders of Sydney

The Harbour is such a majestic place to be at night with all the lights and reflections.

Thanks to our Sponsors!

It’s always great when companies get behind events like the Google Plus Worldwide PhotoWALK. It’s an unmeasured leap of faith on their part as they have no idea what return they may get from their kind contribution. All I can say is they our supporters/sponsors will be unashamedly plugged non-stop by me, and hopefully all of the registered PhotoWALKERS as without them it would be just a walk taking photo’s, with them, it becomes an exciting morning with several lucky winners of some cool photography stuff!

Our Sponsors so far…

Topaz Labs - Topaz Labs have given us a FULL Bundle of their software valued at $299 and a copy of their latest software, Topaz Clarity (That I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE… and you will too!) valued at $50!

Photo-Shop-Studio - has given me 5 vouchers for 2 hours use of their professional photography studio here in Sydney PLUS a bunch of Nikon and Canon professional optical cleaning kits to give away on the day of the walk!

Harvey Norman – Have been generous and given us a heap of printing vouchers and some other cool goodies to give away on the day!

Numbers are growing…

We have over 100 Photographers registered for this event so far and I am confident we will break all of our Photowalk records in regards to number of Photo walkers… If you would like to support us by sponsoring the event in ANY way (I would love a caterer to cook breakfast and serve hot drinks… hint hint) then contact me by clicking HERE

Be a PhotoWALKER

We have broken this walk into two parts, the first part is an early start for those that like to get up early to shoot sunrise, we will be meeting outside of Luna Park next to the Milsons Point Ferry wharf at 6am and making our way around to Jeffrey Street Wharf at Kirribilli where will meet those of you that want to sleep in! At 8:30am the walk will continue back to the starting point of Luna Park where it will conclude.

Today’s iCandy – Harbour Arch

I took this shot on a PhotoWALK I hosted in the exact same location as we’re doing the Google Plus anniversary walk. There are so many photo opportunities and we had a ball!

Use Foreground to create Depth

One of the challenges with Photography is that it is two dimensional. To bring perspective, depth and that feeling of being right there, make sure you have something interesting in your foreground. It will bring perspective to your shot and introduce the third dimension.

Today’s iCandy – Morning Wave

In this image i have used the foreground of the rocks and the movement in the wave to create a great deal of depth. The ship on the Horizon brings perspective and scale to the image, helping your brain work out the 3rd dimension.

Divide your image into 9 sections by using 2 lines in each direction (horizontal and vertical) evenly spaced. You will end up with 4 intersections. It is important to place your subject, or an important part of the subject on one of the intersections. The temptation is to put your subject dead in the middle, but this isn’t as appealing as having your subject off to one side. Some cameras have the option to overlay this ‘Grid’ in your preview, I suggest you turn it on until it becomes second nature.

DId you know that on a lot of DSLR’s these days you can set up custom banks of settings. For example, on my D800 I can set up Bank A for HDR and Bank B for Night Photogrpahy and Bank C for portraits etc etc… I am sure you get it! I have 4 different banks I can save a ‘set’ of settings in, and this saves having to change 5 or 6 things each time you are in another shooting environment.

Today’s iCandy – Akaroa Lighthouse

On my last night on New Zealand, my travel agent booked a room in Christchurch, it was interesting to see Christchurch as it was still in a little bit of a mess from the earthquakes. I decided to check out Akaroa, it is only a 80 minute drive from Christchurch. The drive itself was spectacular, and when I arrived in Akaroa I was wishing this is where my last night was booked. It’s a lovely little town and one you should definitely check out should you find yourself in NZ.
