What is HDR?

HDR is High Dynamic Range. It is a process where several exposures of the same scene are ‘blended’ together to restore the details that were lost by shadows and highlights in an image. There are a lot of mixed emotions about HDR, but to me, I find it to be very pleasing to the eye and I love the colour and details I can capture by using this technique. Not all of my photo’s are HDR, but a lot are.

Software you need

I use Photomatix Pro, I have tried lots of HDR software and find Photomatix the best. Use the Coupon code ’ON3LEGS’ for a 15% discount, you can get it from here -> Photomatix DOWNLOAD

Step 1 - Capturing your image

Watch the video to see how I take multiple exposures so I can create a HDR image… I am using my D800 and you will see what settings I use and how easy it is to set up a D800 for auto bracketing.

Step 2 – Creating your HDR image with Photomatix Pro

Photomatix is a leader in HDR software, unfortunately, no HDR software has got it 100% right, I show you how to maximize your results from this step getting your image ready for the final touches…

Step 3 – The final touches

I’d be surprised to learn that Unified Color’s sooltiun was actually easier to use than Photomatix Light. I know UC’s earlier trial version was a train wreck in usability and speed. Photomatix Light comes for free with Photomatix Pro so it would be interesting to see a comparison between the two.
